An underground market for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.
Experimental Treatment Gaining Popularity Via Social Media
Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed weight-reducing properties. Followers are urged to message these accounts directly for source information, while also obtaining discount codes.
Active Commerce on Social Networks
Separately, a robust market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share “before and after” photos, injection guides and claims of next-day British shipping. Sellers market the substance there before directing customers to WhatsApp for transactions.
Learning About The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an experimental injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could help individuals lose up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Voice Worries
However, physicians and chemists have cautions that the distribution of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in individuals injecting substances of unknown origin.
Some professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing cost of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Enforcement
Selling the unapproved drug on social media or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Several influencers try to sidestep the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but advertising and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or prison.
Service Response and Content Elimination
According to TikTok, the service has taken down violative material and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The company stated it was committed to keeping the service safe and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Digital Marketplace Operations
Research also found communities with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with numerous of members, filled with photos of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed guides for preparing or administering at residence.
Within minutes of entering one community, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where most transactions take place. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one inquired about body mass, health issues or past usage.
Item Details and Costs
Inside these communities, posts display dark colored parcels with Royal Mail labels, stating to include new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can choose between powder vials, prepared at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled injectors usually priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Oversight and Safety Measures
A spokesperson for Telegram stated it regularly monitored harmful content on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Professional Warnings
“People are administering materials they cannot confirm. Although the science behind this drug is valid, these online products may not contain what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in demand to recent cost increases for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are turning to online platforms. But fake treatments are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she said.
Her team has previously seen individuals injured by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Position
A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational product not yet approved … may subject patients to possibly serious medical dangers”.
